The Costly Lesson: A Staggering $130,000 Loss
The hacker’s attack was both devastating and sophisticated:
Drained wallets that once held 130k – now reduced to just $0.
NFTs stolen, including a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT valued at around 12 Ethereum, along with other valuable digital asset.
Even long-forgotten tokens were found and stolen from vesting contracts.

How Did It Happen? A Detailed Breakdown
The hack began with a well-planned social engineering attack:
Impersonation of Reputable Sources:
The hackers pretended to be from a leading news organization, reaching out about an upcoming project and requesting an interview.
Convincing Setup:
Using LinkedIn and other platforms, they appeared credible, even scheduling the interview through Calendly.
Zoom Exploit:
The interview took place over Zoom, where the hackers claimed they couldn't see him and asked him to click "Accept," which ultimately gave them control of his computer.
The Perfect Distraction:
During the call, they requested him to change his shirt, citing color conflicts with their newsletter background. This left his computer unattended, giving them the opportunity to install malicious software or access private keys.
Complete Takeover:
They monitored Peter's computer that night, noting down all his passwords. While he was asleep, they drained his wallet and took over his X account.
They also attempted to log him out of YouTube and filed a claim through his email but were unsuccessful.

Lessons Learned – And How You Can Stay Safe
This incident is a wake-up call for every crypto enthusiast. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
Use Hardware Wallet
Keep your crypto in a Ledger wallet or another secure cold storage solution, rather than in hot wallets like MetaMask or Phantom. Peter usually transferred all his assets to his Ledger wallet, but there was one chain he wasn’t familiar with and didn’t know how to add to the wallet. As a result, he never got around to it, leaving the assets in MetaMask, where they were ultimately stolen.
Separate Devices for Crypto Transactions
Use a dedicated device for crypto transactions. Ideally, one that never connects to the internet unless absolutely necessary.
Avoid Interviews or Live Calls on Your Crypto Device
Never conduct Zoom calls or interviews on the same device used for managing crypto wallets.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Ensure all your accounts are secured with 2FA, including social media profiles. Use different password combinations.
Stay Vigilant Against Social Engineering
If something feels too good to be true or too professional to question – double-check. Verify identities and use official communication channels to confirm legitimacy. Always ask for identity proof.

"As some of you might already know, on February 22nd, scammers tried to post another fake project on my X page. Luckily, the community caught on quickly and warned others in the comments, so no one fell for it.
Frustrated that they couldn’t scam anyone, they got nasty and started posting inappropriate content on my page, which ended up getting my account suspended.
I’m in the process of getting my X account back and should hear back next week. In the meantime, I’ve changed all my passwords across different platforms, using unique ones for each. I’m also getting a hardware device to secure my logins and picking up more Ledger wallets to spread out my assets.
This has been a wake-up call to get my crypto security in order—and a reminder for you to do the same.
